works on the principle of reflection.  The ultrasound machine
sends high frequency sound waves into the body.  When the
waves meet a boundary between types of tissue, some of the sound
waves reflect back to the machine while others continue

The waves that do not get reflected initially travel on until they
meet another boundary and are then reflected.  The ultrasound
machine then calculates the distance to the boundaries by using the
speed of sound in the body and the amount of time it takes the
reflections to return to the machine.  The display of the
distances and intensities of the reflected waves yields the
ultrasound image.
